A Book Review: 'Zoe's Day With Dr. J!' by Dr. Letisha Jefferson

Zoe is five years old and ready to see the doctor! She wakes up excited about her check-up appointment with Dr. J, which makes the experience less scary for kids who may be afraid of what to expect from their annual physical examination. Zoe’s Day With Dr. J! by Dr. Letisha Jefferson (illustrated by Bonnie Bright) gives young readers a story that addresses their fears.

Summary

Zoe is a vibrant little girl who leads the way to see Dr. J. She wakes up and hurries her parents to help her get dressed for the visit. Zoe exhibits no fear while in both the waiting and examination rooms. Dr. J walks the youngster through the process of an annual physical examination. Things come to an end when Zoe gets her vaccination. The youngster is surprised by how much a shot doesn’t hurt and encourages boys and girls to approach their next doctor’s visit with confidence instead of fear.

What We Liked

Zoe’s Personality

The doctor’s visit can be a scary time for young children. There is a lot of machinery and tools that they just don’t understand. Having a character such as Zoe calms fears as she is young, like her fellow readers, and brave enough to face her fears. Zoe does not flinch when her annual shot comes up at the end of the book. She is instead amazed at how little the process hurt.

Seeing Zoe with so much confidence can inspire little ones to have the same boldness. Zoe’s big personality encourages them to take charge of their annual physical examinations and to ask questions when in doubt.

The Information Page

After delivering an informative story about doctor’s visits for kids, Dr. Letisha Jefferson provides even more information to readers. The author includes a fun activity sheet that invites kids to search for tools commonly found in the doctor’s office. Readers are encouraged to check off the items on their sheet and are also given definitions for each tool. This additional information page takes the book from being a story about a little girl who championed her annual check-up to serving as an educational resource that moms and dads can use for at-home vocabulary lessons.

Who’s It For?

Zoe’s Day With Dr. J! by Dr. Letisha Jefferson is the ideal book for small children who are afraid to visit the doctor for their annual check-ups. This is also an excellent resource for parents who want to help their children expand their vocabulary and spelling abilities.
